Death is inevitable. That is a fact that cannot be disputed. We all prefer to think of death as something that happens peacefully in our sleep when we are old and wrinkly, but the reality of the society we have built for ourselves over the millennia says otherwise. Our collective human culture is brought into question through the Game of Death.
Am I really taking these themes seriously if I portray it through a game? Hell yes. If we teach children how to count or how to spell through fun little games, why can’t we teach grown ass adults how to fix the mess they’ve made through a familiar format: the trading card game. I was always jealous of the other kids in elementary school who collected Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh cards. Now I have my own collection of Pokémon cards that inspired the first edition of the Game of Death. For me, games like Pokémon have been a refuge from the real world when things get too heavy. The Game of Death isn’t like that. It only makes things heavier. Let’s battle to the Death. |
